The ingenious engine developer Erhard Melcher designs a four-valve cylinder head for the eight-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC, thereby increasing power output to 250 kW/340 hp. The extraordinary V8 engine, whose valves are placed at the tight angle of 30 degrees, is sold more than 300 times. The unit also marks the beginning of the transformation of AMG from a vehicle tuner to a manufacturer, as several engine components need to be produced by the company. The powerful V8 is also used in the new 300 E 5.0 AMG (W124) mid-range model, enabling the lighter vehicle to reach a breathtaking maximum speed of 280 km/h.
